Charlie Chaplin a Tramp character finds himself at a circus where he is immediately gets chased around by the police who think he is a pickpocket. Running into the bigtop, he is an accidental sensation with his hilarious efforts to elude the police. The ringmaster/owner immediately hires him, but discovers that Charlie cannot be funny on purpose, so he takes advantage of the situation by making Chaplin a janitor just happens to always in the Bigtop at showtime. Unaware of this exploitation, the Tramp falls for the owner's lovely acrobatic daughter, who is abused by her father. His chances seem good, until a dashing rival comes in and Charlies feels he has to compete with him.
The Tramp finds work and the girl of his dreams at a circus.

Car thieves steal the limo and dump the baby in the garbage where he is discovered by a Charlie Chaplin. Charlie Chaplin takes the infant along to raise him. Five years later Edna has become an opera star and does charity work in the hope of relocating her son. A doctor called by Edna discovers the note with the truth about the Kid and reports it to the authorities who come to take him away from Charlie. Before he arrives at the Orphan Asylum Charlie Chaplin steals him back.

Charlie plays an itinerant violinist. He takes up his position outside the back door and begins his concert, but at this moment a street band begins playing outside the front door. When Charlie enters the saloon to pass the hat, the patrons, believing he's part of the band, contribute generously. When the real band leader enters to pass his hat, a fight and chase begin from which Charlie eventually escapes. Charlie, having forsaken the city, wanders down a country road where he comes upon a gypsy encampment where a beautiful drudge , under the control of the brutal Gypsy Chief is washing clothes. Charlie puts aside his cane and violin in favor of a stout club and rescues the girl in an exciting scene in which they dramatically escape in one of the wagons. Later, encamped by the side of a road, Charlie prepares breakfast while the girl goes for water. She meets a handsome artist , who, noticing a shamrock shaped birthmark on her arm, asks her to pose for him. After he finishes his sketch, she invites him to breakfast. During the meal, it's obvious from her face that she's infatuated with him, and Charlie is aware that he's losing her. When the artist leaves, the girl gazes longingly after him as Charlie watches her apprehensively. Some time later, the painting is exhibited in a posh gallery and the Mother, in attendance, almost collapses as she recognizes her daughter by her birthmark. Meanwhile Charlie tries to cheer up the despondent girl by promising that he'll learn to draw too. Suddenly a limousine pulls up and mother and daughter are reunited. Charlie gallantly refuses a cash reward and wishes the artist luck just before they drive off. Alone, Charlie tries to cheer himself but succumbs to his emotions. In the limousine the girl realizes her true feelings and makes the driver return to Charlie, whom she excitedly hauls off to the limousine and to a presumed life of luxury.

Charlie Chaplin is a married man. His wife, complains that they have no money for new shoes for her or food for their baby. They have a fight and Charlie leaves, promising to bring a baby bottle with milk. Meanwhile another couple in a hotel room are rather lovey, as the wife helps hubby Ambrose prepare to go out. On his way out, a young lady who has just completed a love letter asks Ambrose to mail it for her. He puts the letter in his coat pocket. Charlie goes to a store and buys a bottle for the baby, which he puts in his coat pocket. The two men meet at a restaurant and each takes the other's coat by mistake. When Charlie arrives home Charlie's wife finds the note in his pocket and thinks he has a lover; and flies into a rage, eventually breaking an ironing board over his head. Charlie escapes to a nearby park where Ambrose has met his wife which believes he has an illegitimate child.

Charlie is on his way to the USA. Immigrant Chaplin tries to make the best of the nausea-inducing rough seas. He then befriends fellow Edna and her ailing mother. He wins in a card game, puts the money in Edna's bag (she and her sick mother have been robbed of everything). When he retrieves a little for himself he is accused of being a thief. Later, broke, Charlie finds a coin and goes into a restaurant. There he finds Edna, whose mother has died, and asks her to join him. When he reaches for the coin to pay for their meals it is missing (it has fallen through a hole in his pocket). A famous artist decides to hire the girl as his model. Chaplin negotiates an excellent contract for his bride.
